Control is an action-adventure video game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. The game revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret U.S. government agency tasked with containing and studying phenomena which violate the laws of reality. As Jesse Faden, the Bureau's new Director, players explore the Oldest House – the FBC's paranormal New York headquarters – and utilize powerful abilities in order to defeat a deadly enemy known only as the Hiss, which has invaded and corrupted reality. Control was released on 27 August 2019 for Microsoft Windows (via the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Control is set in a modern world wherein supernatural or "paranatural" phenomena occur globally as a result of Altered World Events, intrusions upon ordinary reality shaped by the human collective unconscious. The Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret U.S. government agency, is tasked with investigating these AWEs and collecting the artifacts they leave behind. Among these artifacts are Altered Items, which are mundane archetypal objects which are imbued with supernatural power, and Objects of Power, unique Altered Items which can grant individuals special abilities when "bound." AWEs are connected to various "dimensions" (implied to be parallel universes), which align with Earth's reality as a result of paranatural "resonance." The Bureau's headquarters, the Oldest House, is a shifting skyscraper which defies the ordinary laws of spacetime, far larger on the inside than on the outside. Within the Oldest House are various "Thresholds" leading to alternate dimensions, through which unknown forces occasionally leak in, which the Bureau deals with. The Oldest House seems to be governed by the Astral Plane, a vast white void which the Bureau investigates by dispatching agents there referred to as "astralnauts."
The protagonist of Control is Jesse Faden, the Bureau's new Director, who is appointed suddenly after the previous Director, Zachariah Trench, is mysteriously killed. Jesse experienced a major AWE in her childhood as a result of an Object of Power, a slide projector, discovered by her and her brother Dylan; the slide projector opened doorways to other dimensions, allowing an unknown force to enter and destroy their hometown of Ordinary. Jesse and Dylan were able to close the doorways with the aid of a female supernatural entity Jesse named "Polaris," which has since remained with Jesse, broadcasting telepathic signals to her. Jesse has come to the Oldest House seeking the whereabouts of Dylan, who was kidnapped by the Bureau after the Ordinary AWE. Inside of the Oldest House, Jesse meets a variety of allies in the Bureau, including Emily Pope, Helen Marshall, Simon Arish, Frederick Langston, and the janitor Ahti. Jesse also purses the whereabouts of other missing Bureau staff, particularly Dr. Casper Darling, the Bureau's Head of Research. Jesse is also frequently contacted by the Board, a mysterious being or group of beings from the Astral Plane, which ordained her to become the Director through an Object of Power known as the Service Weapon.
The main antagonist of Control is the Hiss, a hostile, seemingly sapient supernatural force that invades the building from another dimension. The Hiss possesses agents of the Bureau and turns them into weapons of its own, taking advantage of their training and weaponry to spread its resonance to the rest of the building. Jesse's goal throughout Control is to repel the Hiss before it can escape from the Oldest House and destroy the Earth.
